When the shop gets flooded and Carly realises that she forgot to insure it, she resorts to the desperate tactic of stealing money that Brenda has put aside for a memorial playground in memory of her daughter Gennie.
Carly is shocked when the shop floods |
Bob plants the cash in Brenda's apron, but this doesn't have the desired effect as she knows she has already checked it and begins to doubt her memory, fearing that her brain tumour is back.
Lesley Dunlop, who plays Brenda, commented: "Brenda thinks she's going a bit bonkers when the money goes missing, because people keep saying that it can't have gone and she must have put it somewhere else. Brenda thinks that she's getting very forgetful, like she did when she was first diagnosed with her brain tumour. Her greatest fear is that it's coming back. When she finds the money in her apron pocket, she's absolutely positive that she'd already checked it, but of course similar things have happened in the past due to the pressure on her brain from the tumour. She's frightened of what's happening."
Brenda is oblivious to Bob and Carly's scheming |
Dunlop added: "Brenda doesn't want Bob to worry if it's nothing. Chas is Gennie's sister and Brenda doesn't know who else to turn to. Brenda does get the all-clear and when she comes out of the hospital room, she finds that Chas has phoned Bob and he's waiting for her. It's rather lovely because Bob says that she should always tell him if she's worried. She's very pleased to see him, but it's all just a bit much for her, understandably."
While Brenda is hugely relieved to have the all-clear, having to go through the frightening experience will surely only add to her feeling of betrayal once the truth comes out about Bob and Carly's recent behaviour.
Bob and Chas support Brenda at the hospital |
Asked how Brenda would react if the truth came out, Dunlop laughed: "Oh, I think she'd go mad - I would! It's bad enough that it's Val, but the worst betrayal is Bob. I think it would be a huge thing in any relationship and a very difficult thing for her to come back from. I don't think Brenda would know how to come to terms with that sort of betrayal, especially around the time of Gennie's memorial. Nobody would ever think that Bob would be involved in the theft of the memorial money, it's just inconceivable, really. I think it'll be a rocky period ahead!"
